We would like to share a miracle with you all! Lawinsie Lajoie is one of the children in one of our school support, nurturing, and shelter programs. She was chosen, along with the other 16 kids, among more than 300 evaluated, to receive support in 2014. That’s when she discovered, through nutritionist analysis, that she suffered from severe and chronic malnutrition.
After visiting the place where she used to live with her grandparents, uncles and aunts, due to the death of both her parents, the whole family started to receive support, since we realized they were all living under a borrowed tent and in terrible conditions. Since then, Nations Help transferred them to a new place, rented for them so that they could live in more dignified conditions. They started to receive food and special nutrition, mainly because we noticed that they would only eat when someone gave them something. Back then, her only dream was receiving a new flip flop, that was later given to her.
To a new life!
Today, we rejoice when we see how Lawinsie’s life and everyone in her family were transformed because of a simple act of love and care. It’s impressive how we can see each effort and money invested in their lives arise like seeds planted in fertile soil, which now gives us good fruits. To us, it was enough to believe that a change was possible, and now we see that even the impossible can happen if only you believe. By moving to the new rental house, we noticed that the whole family started to dream again. The joy in this girl’s smile is amazing, and the way the sadness in her eyes disappeared is remarkable.
Lawinsie and her family’s shelter made the beauty hidden under so much suffering bloom, and the program was a turning point for this God’s child, nurturing dreams that wouldn’t have the chance of happening. The young lady is becoming more and more intelligent and motivated to live, dreaming in becoming a leader in Haiti, learn many languages and travel around the world to have a chance of learning things that she wouldn’t in her own country, and we can already see the beginning of this great dream come true. Even though the majority of the population speak Crioulo in Haiti, Lawinsie’s favorite subject is French, and with the support from Ezechiel and Guerna, now she’ll be able to start studying Spanish. After applying for a scholarship and taking a special exam, the hardworking girl, with only 15 years old, got the opportunity of studying at the Dominican Republic for three months, where she will stay with a Haitian missionary that is friends with her family and will start the first contacts with the new language.
We received the family’s gratitude, that looked for our leaders in Haiti to thank for the great investment we have been making in this girl’s life, and also with a sense of pride to see someone transform the little that was given to her into something so big, and at the same time, feeling ashamed for not being able to imagine and dreaming bigger for all the children we take care of. The only thing left for us to do is to humble ourselves beneath the wonderful work that the love of God is doing in her life and give Him all the glory, because we know what we see in front of our eyes, a miracle that walks happily through the streets of Haiti, with the dream of being a nurse, but that can become something much bigger.
While Lawinsie is studying Spanish abroad, her younger sister Chalincie Lajoie will take her place at the school tutoring classes that were so well seized by her. This was something that the family asked for, and of course, it is another opportunity we can’t deny. Chalincie’s joy of being part of our program and now seeing her pray for her sister with the intense and true desire, asking God to make her a great leader, moves us all and pushes us to continue.
To witness in the life of these children and their family such a wonderful and even unexpected result of the daily work we do to invest in Haiti’s next-generation, giving them hope and power to make their dreams come true and transform their future, makes us forget all the difficulties we went through up until the point we harvested these fruits and say: it was all worth it. Lawinsie told us one day that her favorite character in the Bible is Joshua and we hope for more miracles like the one in this man’s life, and that now seems to repeat in her journey. Our hearts wish is that these are the firsts steps of a great leader that will make a difference and will be able to transform the future of Haiti.
