Hello! My name is Caroline Martinez and I was brought to the New Life House in 1996. I do not have a birth certificate, but it is believed that I was born sometime in 1988. I was abandoned by my family and was living in the General Hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. I have severe cerebral palsy, which may be linked to being abandoned. You see that in Haiti many look to those suffering from a disability or paralysis, believing that these diseases are caused by demonic spirits. Fortunately, Social Service took me out of there and brought me to New Life. It’s so wonderful for me to find a place that really wants me! Although the paralysis has impaired my speech, mobility and intellect, this does not stop me from smiling and laughing. I love to sit under the trees and have someone to nurture in my arms.
